What's the best way to end a program with Task Manager? - Posted Tuesday, June 29, 2010

QUESTION:
I read that it's better to shut down a program with the "End Task" button on the Applications tab in Task Manager than to use the "End Process" option in the right context menu on the Processes tab. Is that true and if so, why? Thanks!

ANSWER:
When you use the "End Process" method, it shuts down the program immediately, without closing any files that you have open or asking you to save your work. That means you could lose data. When you use "End Task," the application closes the same way it does when you close it from its own menu, asking you for confirmation or to save what you're working on. So why would you ever use "End Process?" Because sometimes a program gets hung up and can't respond, and that's the only way for you to get it to shut down. But "End Process" should be a last resort; always try the other methods first.
