IRS to shut down Non-Profit Organizations who don't submit Tax Reports - Posted Monday, July 05, 2010

This year the IRS will revoke the tax-exempt status of any tax-exempt organization that fails to file its 990 (or 990-EZ or 990-N) for three consecutive years. The National Center for Charitable Statistics at the Urban Institute has created a tool where you can search for those groups in your area that may potentially lose their tax-exemption. Here’s the link:

NCCS - IRS ePostcard and Revocation Status

You may want to check to see if your favorite Non-Profit Orgination is in danger as soon as possible. The tax-exemption reinstatement process will be cumbersome, time-consuming, and expensive. Happy searching!

IRS Awards Payment Processing Contract to RBS WorldPay - Posted Thursday, April 23, 2009

(April 23, 2009)
PASS THIS TO ALL YOUR CPA FRIENDS!!!
RBS WorldPay, the payment processor that recently acknowledged a security breach that compromised an estimated 1.5 million payroll card accounts and 1.1 million Social Security numbers (SSNs), has been awarded a contract to process US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax return payments.

Unbelievable!

Last month, Visa declared RBS was not in compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS); a spokesperson for the Atlanta-based payment processor says the company expects to be compliant once again "within the next few weeks."  RBS will not process payments taxpayer credit card payments until January
20, 2010; before that date, the company must show that its IT systems are PCI-DSS compliant and it must pass an IRS-required security audit.

The IRS's decision poignantly shows just how little regard this agency has for information security.  Hopefully, the IRS's extremely questionable judgment in this case will be subjected to Congressional and GAO oversight.

And in other news, the NRA has appointed Dick Cheney as its
spokesman for gun safety.  (Grin)
