 About 1USA's Email Servers Minimize

1USA has its own Email Servers.  We do not use outsourced servers like some other ISPs do.
Our philosophy:

 - If a customer's computer is protected as much as possible, then they will have less need for Tech Support.

 - If a customer is educated, via the 1USA Newsletters, the customer will make fewer judgement errors... resulting in keeping their computers clean of viruses and malware.

 -  If a customer calls Tech Support with a question,

 -  it would be nice to be speaking with a Tech Support Specialist who speaks English,
 -  doesn't talk 'down' to you,
 -  knows what they're talking about,
 -  and solves your problem quickly and efficiently.
Generally, we can fix most problems on the same phonecall.

While most ISPs (internet service providers) outsource their Tech Support, the 1USA staff feels that if we are aware of your problems, and if a few people are having the same problem, then we will issue a News Alert to everyone - just so they know what's going on.

In the past few years, the only major hassle has been when customers stray from well-known websites and end up at an infected website.
ALL of the search engines have the capability of directing you to an infected website.
ALL of the "Social" websites have the capability of allowing other people (or robots) to infect web pages... or to put a link that goes to an infected web page.
(There are more than 3 million infected websites out there, you know.)
The social websites include:  MyLife, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, and the list goes on.
While this paragraph doesn't directly affect your 1USA Email Service, it can cause computer problems that show up when sending or receiving emails.

How 1USA Email Service works Minimize

1. Incoming email is received.

2.  Email is authenticated against the sending domain's Sender Policy Framework - which informs receiving servers how to handle emails... (a) that arrive from authentic servers or (b) arrive from faked servers.  This particularly is used by Amazon.com, FedEx, UPS, most Banks, and other domains.  Details at www.1usa.com/spf.html

3.  Friends -- The 1USA mail server will send out a "Did you send me an email?" challenge the first time someone (or a Robot) sends an email.  If the email arrived from a legitimate source, it will remain.  If the email arrived from a fake source, the pending email will be deleted.  You didn't want to read faked emails anyway.  You have the option of over-riding the Friends Challenge, and you can pull an email in to your In-Box if you know the sender.  An example would be a recent online purchase.

4. Global IP Address Reputation Database -- Every computer or device attached to the internet has an IP address.  IP means Internet Protocol.  This is what makes the internet work.  Sometimes the IP address is static, meaning the same all the time; and sometimes the IP address is dynamically-assigned... meaning that you receive a different IP address out of a Pool (assigned by your ISP) each time you connect.
Our 1USA system will log the reputation of IP addresses that send email into us... and the system will assign a SpamGrade for this function.

5.  Phrase & Keyword Filter -- The 1USA mail servers will next evaluate the email for phrases and keywords that indicate the 'spamminess' of an email, and it will assign a SpamGrade for this function.

6.  Baesian Content Filter -- is a filter that can detect V-_I-=A-zG-.R+A as being the word Viagra, and it also assigns a Spamgrade for this function.  More weight is assigned because the sender is obviously trying to hide the real word to get past most mail servers.

7.  Local Reputation Database -- is a history of emails that have similar traits, and whether the previous emails were OK or were considered Spams by the customers; and it will assign a SpamGrade for this function.

8.  Smart Web Page Probe -- If an email has a http or www link in it, the link will be probed to determine if the web page mentions any of the Phrases or Keywords, or might contain a Virus.  A Spamgrade is assigned for this function.

9.  User System Preferences -- Individual customers (not just on a Domain level) may choose 'loose', 'medium' or 'tight' settings for their 1USA Mailbox.  Individual customers may choose to Drop offending messages, or move them to a BulkMail folder for later review.
Special Note to Parents of minor children:  Our 1USA Mail Servers can allow you to control who sends emails to your kids.  You can provide a list of known senders to allow... and the system then rejects all others.  This is also useful for Suzie back in the Accounting Department who should not be receiving emails from unknown senders.

10.  Self-Training NeuralNet Filter - is an email filter that constantly updates itself to correctly grade the "spams of the day".  It is common for bulk mail senders to frequently change their IP address, their Domain name, the Subject line, or to use different words in the message body.  This filter also detects those "invisible" paragraphs of random words" on emails that try to throw-off mail filters.

11.  The resulting email will either be determined to be unwanted spam or a clean email -- again depending on your individual settings on your individual email account.

BOTTOM LINE:  1USA customers, even people who have had the SAME MAILBOX since 1996, get NO SPAMS in their mailbox that they don't want.
